Within every EHS safety compliance program there are always so many moving parts and people, and it can be difficult to maintain laser-like focus when overseeing it.
Questions we will help you answer:
- What is my safety program responsible for?
- How do these responsibilities fall into compliance?
- What are my obligations for my safety compliance program?
- How do I ensure my people are meeting their obligations?
In order to answer those questions here are the 7 key elements to help you set up an effective EHS Safety Compliance Program
1. Policies, Procedures, Regulations, Standards, Codes
Every policy, procedure, regulation, standard, or code will define how your safety program will be managed. Depending on your industry and the rules you must follow, this will give you an outline of what all you have to be aware of.
2. Compliance Oversight
It is imperative to have a person or a committee that shares responsibility for compliance oversight. These are not safety cops, but rather a person/group that intends to keep your safety program in compliance. The person or group that is responsible should represent the organization as a whole. By doing this it will make employees follow the safety program for the correct reasons.
3. Training, Educating, Coaching
Training, education, and coaching your employees is crucial to developing an effective safety compliance program. This will provide all your employees with the same information so everyone is on the same page.
4. Reporting
There are 3 things to focus on for an effective safety program.
Reporting…
- What we are responsible for adhering to
- Where it is that it is required
- How we are performing in each of those areas
5. Monitoring & Auditing
To ensure your employees are meeting their obligations and requirements of the program you must perform program oversight. This will be in the form of audits and monitoring daily activities.

6. Enforcement
Enforcing the safety program by ensuring that employees are following the plan that is in place. While also having a plan in place for those who are not in compliance with it.
7. Responding To Issues
This element can often be overlooked but it is imperative to do so for an effective safety compliance program. You need to make sure there is a resolution to any issue that may arise. Closure of issues that are addressed is mandatory.
Understand that your inability to respond to issues is your inability to adhere to the very compliance requirements you’ve set your program around.
